How to find motivation to take action

Whether you feel motivated it has no bearing on the fact that everything you do starts from a point of motivation.

You may say “Well I don`t feel motivated to go to my job in the morning because I hate it, but I still do get up and go, so how can that be true?” Or likewise you may say “I know I don`t like my job and I am very motivated to leave but I am still there, so my motivation is making no difference to taking action to leave” and this where people get very confused on the topic of motivation.

How is it that people dislike their job for example and are not motivated to do it anymore, but they turn up every day and continue to do the same job? Or, how is it that someone can feel so motivated to leave their job, but they continue to stay? I am using a job as an example, but this scenario plays out in several different areas in peoples` lives.

The thing is these people in the scenarios above are indeed taking action based on motivation, but their motivation is centred in something other than the job that they are doing.

They are not motivated by the job, they may be motivated by their children who need the money that this job brings in, their parents that originally influenced them to follow that career path.

They are motivated by their spouse or the fact that they want a roof over their head. They are motivated by a multitude of things that have nothing to do with liking their job. It could be that they are motivated by the fact that although they hate their job, it is familiar to them and the thought of beginning again or starting something new scares them.

Many people fear change! People say familiarity breeds contempt and sometimes that is true and other times even within the contempt of familiarity there is also the comfort and security of at least knowing what is going to happen, even if what happens is not great. Yes, it is sad but it`s true and many people live their entire lives like that.

People are motivated by the outcome of their actions and what their actions will bring, not by the actions themselves. That is why it is so important to be clear or what your motivation is.

As a small example, my motivation for writing this blog stems from my desire to help raise your awareness of your true motivation in order to help you live an inspired and inspiring life.

I want you to be able to take action on the things you want to do and put an end to having to sacrifice one thing for another because I know you can have it all.

Now here`s the thing, if you are not clear about what the centre of your motivation is or, if you do know how to ensure that the centre of your motivation (children, spouse, home, security or whatever else it may be for you) is included in your life changes in your life, you will make the change and revert back or you will not make the change at all.

I have seen people leave and start new careers, relationships, health regimes and do a complete 360 a short while down the line even though they were happy with their decision initially and I am sure you have too!

The good news is, it is possible to make a big change to your life in a way that is inclusive of everything else that you love.

Below I have written some tips on how you can include your real motivation in your life change.

Here are 3 tips on how to find out what is really motivating you and how to include it in your decision making process

  • Write down the goal or change that you wish to make and expand it to its highest form : For example if you want to change careers write down what you want to do, how much you want to earn, what location you want to do it from, the kind of people you want to work for or with, the amount of hours you want to spend doing that.
  • Write down the top 3-5 people or things in your life : this could be family, friends, finance, health, spirituality etc.
  • Write down how these things would improve or how these people would benefit, including you

Now you will have a clearer picture of what is really motivating you, and a picture of what your life will look like when you make the change.
